Before the fireworks begin on the Fourth of July, enjoy camaraderie, culture, and old-fashioned paniolo pride with the 61st Annual July 4 Rodeo and Horse Races at Parker Ranch this Friday.

The family-friendly rodeo has been a beloved tradition for more than six decades as it showcases the time-honored skills of the Hawaiian cowboy through fast-paced, crowd-favorite competitions like horse races, ranch mugging, team roping, Poʻowaiʻu, and more.

This experience is made possible through the generous support of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. The event brings together generations of paniolo and families to honor Waimea’s ranching heritage and the spirit of the Fourth of July.

As part of the annual tradition, Parker Ranch honors individuals who have made a lasting impact on the island community. This year, it is all about cherished retirees: Keoki Liana, Tsuruo Nakata, and Zen Fujii.

With support from the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, there will be two jumbo screens set up at the arena for the first time. They will bring fans closer to the action with live coverage, replays, and interviews with the paniolo.

Guests can enjoy a lively mix of local food and craft vendors and keiki activities, such as a petting zoo and pony rides. Parker Ranch commemorative items will also be available at the Paniolo Preservation Society booth. As for the rodeo, paniolo will be riding rain or shine.

Gates open at 7:30 a.m., and the grand entry kicks off the main rodeo action at 9 a.m., with nonstop excitement through 1 p.m. The rodeo grounds are located at 67-1349 Ala ʻŌhiʻa St., just off Māmalahoa Highway (Highway 190) in Waimea.
